Lies and Deception

I never understood why people have to lie and deceive. Especially if you consider yourself frum. When someone lies and deceives the majority of the time someone is going to end up seriously hurt. It is not ethical to lie and it is not ethical to deceive and it certainly against the Torah and all Jewish principles. There are times according to halacha that it is permissible to tell a lie or deceive but these are only specific times and the result is not going to be someone hurt. If you are an honest person and try to live an ethical life why do people need to take advantage? Why does this happen?

Right on.

Emes is one of the things upon which the world exists (last mishna in Pirkei Ovos, perek aleph). People who aren't emesdik endanger it.

Hashem yiracheim.

It is a terrible thing I hate lies the most out of anything, it should never happen.

I am one person that tries to be completely honest. The problem is people get hurt when you tell the truth as well. you dont like their shirt, shaitel looks bad, understand? Unfortunaly I am too honest and i tell it like it is. However when i give a compliment at least people know i am not lying!

I like to think that when most people "lie" they consider it to be a necessary evil to spare someone's feelings. I'm not sure if many people start out with the intention of being evil or devious, but lies have the tendency to wind up that way. We can only do our own histadlus and hope for the best in others and ourselves.

Litvak- Looks like there is another thing we agree on.

Chaverah- Sometimes you just need to tell someone those things. If your spouse looks like a mess and is about to go to a business meeting you need to tell them the truth.

Frumhouse- I dont agree with you because i am of the belief that i would rather hear the truth and be a little angry then hear a lie and findout later it was a lie which will get me more angry and for a longer period of time.

SWFM- Since you hate lies also, do you always tell the truth no matter what?

So far I didn't have to lie, I hope I won't have to. What about you who hates lies would you ever lie?

SWFM_ I dont believe that I ever tell a lie. I always try to be as honest as I can when it comes to everything. Thats why i get so upset when I see dishonesty. If you are a certain way you should hope and believe people would act that way towards you but unfortunatly in the world we live in that is not the case.

Now to lie in order not to hurt someone is one thing. Imagine this, a girl or a guy sent you a message on Frumster, and you don't find him/her very attractive. So you are not going to say. Well I am not interested in seeing you cause you are ugly. Instead you say, you read the profile and you think you are not a match.
