Quick Survey about Jews and Halloween

I think that it is quite clear that an observant Jew should not celebrate or take part in anything that has to do with Halloween. I found the following articles on line here and here to support this. My question that I want to ask is if giving candy to kids is permissible. By giving candy you are not celebrating any holiday but the person you are giving the candy to might think that you are. In some areas if you do not give candy, your house, car and property will be hit with eggs, silly strings and all sorts of stuff which will cost you a lot of money to clean up. If a cute little kid in costume comes and rings your bell and says Trick or Treat, what are you going to do or what should you do?

Personally, I would just try to avoid any cute little kids by turning off most of your lights, so they think you're out.

I don't think there is anything wrong with giving candy. That shouldn't make anyone think you partake in Holoween. It could be a chillul hashem if you open the door and don't give.

Sorah- Welcome to my blog.
SWFM- Maybe you can distibute some of your roaches as a halloween prank to the trick or treaters
Litvak- Thanks for the link. I was actually going to search Gils blog to see if he had anything because i figured he would. He seems to say that it is permissible to give out candy.

I say you give it to them in order to avoid a chillul hashem.

Turning your lights out won't work unless you don't mind turning them back onto find your entire house wrapped in toilet paper.

What does work is giving out apples- your house will be permanently blacklisted for handing out healthy snacks.

I give out candy now that we live in a very mixed neighborhood. When we lived in a very Jewish neighborhood in a big city, I did not.

I would give them something so they don't get upset. But they don't ever come.

Also, I think kasamba's idea is excellent.

ive never heard of anything so ridiculous. we just turn off the main lights and dont answer the door. i dont see what the big deal is.. i live in a neighbourhood with NO religious poeple, and no one thinks or assumes anything.. halloween isnt MANDATORy - some poelpe participate, and some dont... nothing to do with being jewish or frum. i cant imagine why anyone who doesnt wnt to celebrate halloween would give out candy..

We just keep the lights off and treat it like any other day. No kids come and it's not a problem.
