Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach zt'l Yartzeit

I just wanted to post something quick with a much longer post coming up later. Last night and today is the Yartzeit of Shlomo Carlebach. For those of you who don't know who he is or are not familiar with him can check out this. Today at 11 am eastern time Nachum Segal will be hosting a live lunch where you can listen to Reb Shlomo's music. There will also be an archive here from the Jm in the AM show this morning which featured Reb Shlomo's music. If anyone has any stores about Reb Shlomo please feel free to put them in the comments. Anything that is not appropriate will be deleted. I will be posting again later today with stories and comments about the life of Reb Shlomo.

Today is the yohrzeit of HaGaon hatzaddik, Maran Harav Schach, ztvk"l, zechuso togein oleinu !

To anonymous- It is also his Yartzeit and I recognize that but i would not potray him as a Tzaddik. Somone who spoke out against Lubavich the way he did as well as the way he involved himself in politics is not a sign of a Tzaddik. Reb Shlomo was someone who accepted everyone no matter their affiliation. Rav Shach did not.

if you were to ask me who I thought the most influential Jews of the 20th Century, I would place Reb Shlomo somewhere with the Lubavitcher Rebbe and Reb Mayer Kahane. Look at what they did!
Can anybody hold a candle to those 3?

I am moche on the kovod of Rav Schach, zecher tzaddik livrocho !

You know there was another great Jewish leader, a big talmid chochom, many years ago, who also spoke out against other frummer Yidden, but I am sure you recognize him as a tzaddik. His name was Moshe Rabbeinu and he spoke out against a big tzaddik and talmid chochom called Korach. Do you hold that against Moshe Rabbeinu ?

Sometimes a leader of klal Yisroel must take a strong stand to protect the integrity of our beliefs in the real world we live in.

Talking about politics, the Lubavitcher Rebbe was quite involved in that actually, I don't see how you can imply otherwise.

Ben- I agree with you. You sound like a Kahanist because if you go to the Kach or Kahane web pages they list those same three as Jewish heros.

anonymous- You cannot compare Rav Shach to Moshe Rabeinu and Korach to Chabad/Lubavich. I am not Lubavich in any way or form but anyone who is true Tzadik or Gadol would not speak badly about another Jew. It is one thing to give someone mussar to try and change their ways and it is another to put someone in Cherem. I will admit that Lubavich has many strange customs and can be considered by some as a cult since once you are a Lubavicher you are always a Lubavicher because of the extent of their minhagim but if you ask any Lubavicher they will show you how all of their minhagim are based on Torah somewhere. Did Rav Shach sit down with other Gedolim or even the Lubavicher Rebbe to ask him to explain why they do or act in the way they do? The Lubavicher Rebbe was not involved in politics. He met with politicians and said if so and so happens so and so will happen, but that is not politics. The Lubavicher Rebbe did not paskin laws for the democratic or republican parties or any assembly or anything. Politicians went to him and asked advice. Rav Shach went out and founded the Shas party as well as his own party. I am not saying anything bad about Rav Shach and I am sure he was a Talmud Chacham but sometimes Talmdei Chachamim make mistakes and because of those mistakes should not be considered a Tzaddik. The way he spoke about Chabad and the way he involved himself in politics are the problem. The Rosh Yeshiva of Chofetz Chaim does not agree with Chabad and at a time was very close with them. He saw their minhagim were different and not in the same path as his so he parted ways with them without publically saying anything bad about them.

"anyone who is true Tzadik or Gadol would not speak badly about another Jew."

What ? What about the great Rabbonim who spoke out against Shabsai Tzevi yemach shemo veezichro ? They were not true gedolim ? Was the Satmar Rebbe also not true because he opposed Theodore Herzl ?

"The way he spoke about Chabad and the way he involved himself in politics are the problem."

They are not the problem, they are the solution !

You sit here in the comfort of America and benefit from Rav Schach's sacrifices in combating the Lubavitcher cult and diss him like that ? Not right...

Anonymous- I am not going to have a back and forth argument with someone who clearly is bias and is not going to open their eyes to something that is very problematic. Check out the post hear regarding this whole issue and then get back to me and let me know if you have changed your opinion. http://theantitzemach.blogspot.com/2006/11/five-years-without-rosh-yeshivah.html

I want to ask you - do you think Reb Shlomo would be dissing Rav Schach like you just did ? I don't think so. Why don't you learn from his example ?

FrumWithQuestions said...

anonymous- I was not dissing Rav Shach i was just saying because of some of the things he did he should not be considered a Gadol Hador since all of Klal Yisrael did not agree with him. The same applies to Reb Shlomo although things are starting to change since more people are learning his Torahs and his music has become so widespread that you cannot go to any shul or yeshiva regardless of the affilation without hearing one of his niggunim.

" i was just saying because of some of the things he did he should not be considered a Gadol Hador since all of Klal Yisrael did not agree with him."

By that yardstick the Lubavitcher Rebbe shouldn't be either.

"The same applies to Reb Shlomo although things are starting to change since more people are learning his Torahs and his music has become so widespread that you cannot go to any shul or yeshiva regardless of the affilation without hearing one of his niggunim."

Reb Shlomo's niggunim are banned in various Hassidic courts as well as some other places, to this day.
